Great Article: Infographic: What makes a film noir?

http://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/features/infographic-what-makes-film-noir

This is a very close to one source's definitive list of what makes a film a Film Noir - based on the classics. Thank you to BFI for putting this wonderful info-graphic together! Highly recommended, and worth saving since it is so well done.

There are some opinions in this info-graphic that are worth noting, and some definitions and observations that are unique to the team that put this together. Some of my criteria differ than what's on this chart, as do many other fans and experts in the genre. This is what you get into Film Noir, everybody has a differing set of criteria, and the "what's important to them."

The best way to go is use this as a springboard for your own thoughts, incorporate these ideas to your definition and thoughts, and build from there. This is art, and art is full of subjective qualities, so no two definitions of a piece or group of pieces will ever be the same.

But it is a wonderful and researched chart, and amazing work. Could this be the beginning of a revival of interest in the genre?

Nah.

I have to be pessimistic, this is Film Noir we are talking about.
